What is a drape table?

Designer drape tables have been around as long as draperies. They are also called "display" or "knock down" tables. Drape tables are typically oversized round accent tables, with a fabric draped over the top and sides to match the surrounding decor, and with a piece of glass set on top of the fabric. In today's large "Great Rooms", drape tables blend in with oversize tv's and furniture to perfectly "fill up the space" with a customized look. Our "best seller" which seems to work best with most decorating applications is the 30" diameter x 30" high round drape table.

Drape tables are made out of solid 5/8" wood particle board for a smooth finish but with no splinters- and they are very heavy: tables weigh from about 35 to 70 pounds depending on size. These tables are designed to be draped with fabric. Particle board can be painted if you want, but the finish doesn't turn out as good as painting hardwood. Drape tables are typically made in 3 parts to assemble with NO mechanical attachments: 2 slotted legs slide together to make the base, and then the top sets on the base, secured by an "X" underneath that channels the legs. This simple yet timeless design allows for maximum versatility, sturdyness, and portability. These are the original heavy-duty 1950's-style display tables, not the newer mass-produced Chinese "cardboard-thickness" mdf or wobbly "stick leg" ones.

The drape table has stood the test of time as an essential tool of the interior designer. We have manufactured drape tables at the Do It Yourself Store in Dallas, Texas for over 50 years. DIYS was founded by Mr. Joseph Eggers in 1957, whose family owned a lumber business "back east"- one of the first manufacturers to introduce particleboard drape tables to the U.S. home decor market.

Although DIYS changed ownership over the decades, a unique twist is that the round drape tables are still manufactured using the exact same techniques, jigs AND the 1950's American-made cast iron woodworking equipment Mr. Eggars used to make the very first drape table! For increased accuracy on complicated shapes, we now also have a state-of-the-art computerized router to cut the parts.

Other uses for drape tables

Drape tables are easily customized to almost any decor. There are many uses for these sturdy, portable tables. In 1981, our drape tables were featured on the front page of the Dallas Morning News "Home & Design" section, in a story titled "The Great Dorm Reform... With a weekend and $500, you and your roomie can turn a dumpy dorm room into a designer's delight!"

We can make a custom size table for you to fit an exact spot. Drape tables store flat in 3 parts so they are ideal for the "extra" temporary table space you need for holiday parties and get-togethers. Drape tables also work great as trade show tables, party/special event tables, retail store display tables, and in restaurant/hotel lobbies and meeting rooms. These style tables also make great christmas tree tables and activity tables.
